How to join a Unit or Group
Collaboratory 2 provides an Identity manager to manage your Units and Groups.
A Unit is a fairly static structure that identifies attributions of an EBRAINS user. Units are used to represent the work breakdown structure of the HBP project. They also indicate the country, institution or company of a user.
A member of a Unit X in the tree is also automatically a member of all the other Units between Unit X and the root of the tree. An administrator of a Unit X in the tree is also an admin of all the other Units between Unit X and the leaves above it.
A Group is potentially a more dynamic ad hoc structure where the Group admins choose who to add or not. Groups can contain users, Units or other Groups.
For instance, in HBP SGA3, Units are used to accredit users at the task level to better identify the large number of HBP members. Groups have been used to represent attendees at workshops.
How to access the Identity manager
To access the Identity manager, from any wiki page, click on the Identity manager icon in the upper right-hand corner next to the “Log-out” button.
Here, you see which Units and Groups you are a member (or admin) of. It is also a fast way to access the “Browse Units” and “Search Groups” pages.
Alternatively, you can access the Units tree structure via this URL:

And, you can search for groups via this URL:

How to become a member of a Unit
- Click on Browse Units
- Navigate the tree of Units to reach the Unit you wish to join (e.g. your HBP SGA3 Task)
- Click on "Request to Join". An email will be sent to the administrators of the Unit (including the administrators of the parent Units), and they will decide whether access is granted or denied. You will be notified via email of the decision.
NOTE:
- An administrator cannot add you to a Unit directly without a request from you. You must request membership by following the instructions above.
- Some Units do not have an active Request to Join button. That is a setting of each Unit.
- You can click on the Admins tab inside a Unit to see who are its direct administrators.
How to become a member of a Group
- Click on “Search Groups” and search for the Group name you wish to join.
- You can also see all the available Groups to join by typing group and by clicking on “Display only Groups that accept membership requests.”
- Choose your Group and click on "Request to Join." An email will be sent to the administrators of this Group, and they will decide whether access is granted or denied. The decision will be sent via email.
NOTE:
- An administrator of a Group can add you directly as member of a Group without your request.
- Some Groups do not have an active Request to Join button. That is a setting of each Group.
- You can click on the Admins tab inside a Group to see who are its administrators.
