Overview

EBRAINS Live Papers are structured and interactive online documents that bring together code, models, and data. They can either complement published scientific articles or be stand-alone publications. Interactivity is a prominent feature with several integrated tools and services that allow users to download, visualise or simulate data, models and results presented in the corresponding publications.

Live papers can be built using the integrated Live Paper Builder tool. This allows authors to create rich, interactive web pages without requiring any web development skills. It allows for easily linking to resources in community databases such as EBRAINS KG, NeuroMorpho.org, ModelDB, the Allen Brain Atlas, thereby acting as an integrator of scientific resources spanning diverse data types.

Live papers, prior to their publication, can also be password-protected. This allows restricting access to desired user groups such as to reviewers of an associated manuscript. When ready for publication, authors may request curation through EBRAINS support. The curation process, in part, ensures that all linked resources are publicly available in suitable repositories.

Once curation is complete, a DOI is attributed and the live paper is made available online. The Live Paper DOI further assists the citation of published data and models, thereby incentivising authors to publish and share such resources, and ensuring that they are duly acknowledged when these resources are reused.
